The university experience can be a crucial period in the formation of one's identity, including sexual and gender identities. Many students come out as queer or transgender during this time, and many use this opportunity to explore or solidify their identities. Unfortunately, like minorities across the country, LGBTQIA2S+ students often face discrimination, harassment, threats and violence in their communities. In response to these issues, the University of California, Boulder has taken steps to support the health and well-being of this population.
The LGBTQIA2S+ Resource Program is located in the student development and participation offices in Building 500, room 512-02. This program provides dynamic events and services to meet the needs of the university's LGBTQIA2S+ community. Additionally, Queer Social Hour is a community group that creates a space for LGBTQIA2S+ students to connect with each other and discuss various topics. Social workers have an essential role to play in creating a safe space for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. They should promote policies, laws and programs that affirm, support and value LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, families and communities.
This page provides tools and resources to help social workers better support LGBTQIA2S+ people throughout their lives. Creating an inclusive environment for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals is essential for their mental health and well-being. Social workers can help by advocating for policies that protect the rights of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, providing resources to support them, and educating others about the importance of creating a safe space for this population. By taking these steps, social workers can help create a more equitable society for all.
